Antique Japanese Black and Gold Lacquer Ware Box/Pot

£24.00

I’ve seen them listed as opium pots, thread stores, powder puff boxes…who knows the definitive purpose of this little box and to be honest who knows it’s future use! It could store nutmeg, beads, paper clips, cotton wool balls, nothing…whatever goes in it, it remains a really good looking piece for your desk, shelf or sideboard! It would make a very nice gift.

Decorated with intricate gilded illustrations-there is a man being pulled (and pushed) onwards in a cart, along a track, past what I assume to be Mount Fuji? On the lid there is some sort of reading session or learning happening. I like to think it’s book club and the gent in the cart is late and he’s hurt his ankle (although he is carrying blades).

I believe these pots were made from boiled cardboard that was then subject to a lacquering process. It was probably made around the 1920s.

It measures 7 cm in height, approx. It has a base diameter of 8 cm. The lid fits nice and snugly. There is some wear to the decoration and a loss of shine. There is also a small dent to the top of the lid. Please see all photographs.
