Traditional Russian Folk Music Treshchotka Clapper Percussion Instrument

We had to do a bit of digging to find out what this was, to be honest! Thankgoodness for our knowledgeable Instagram community! They always come up trumps! (You can follow us on Insta @thecambridgeflea if you fancy!)

We now know it is not a napkin holder, toast rack or, indeed, letter rack! It is a hand built percussion idiophone instrument used in Russian folk music to create a clapping sound-and that it does! Beautifully hand painted on the end boards and simply strung together with the addition of small green beads to give space between the boards, this noisemaker is perfect for use or display. It measures approx 13 x 10 x 4.5 cm and we believe it is used by holding the small handles and rocking the boards to and fro at whatever pace suits the music you are accompanying! Traditionally used at weddings in the past, apparently.
